Note:These pages make extensive use of the latest XHTML and CSS Standards. They ought to look great in any standards-compliant modern browser. Unfortunately, they will probably look horrible in older browsers, like Netscape 4.x and IE 4.x. Moreover, many posts use MathML, which is, currently only supported in Mozilla. My best suggestion (and you will thank me when surfing an ever-increasing number of sites on the web which have been crafted to use the new standards) is to upgrade to the latest version of your browser. If that's not possible, consider moving to the Standards-compliant and open-source Mozilla browser.

Some Job Offers

Posted by Urs Schreiber

Below are various recent job offers in maths that colleagues are asking me to circulate. One in Liverpool on motives. One in Prague, on geometry and algebra. One in Erlangen, on higher categories and TQFT. One in Adelaide, on differential geometry.

Liverpool

Vladimir Guletskii posts the links

about a PhD vacancy on motives and stable model category theory in Liverpool.

Prague

The Eduard Čech center for algebra and geometry was established in 2005. From 2012 it will continue as the national research center under the name Eduard Čech Institute for Algebra, Geometry and Mathematical Physics (ECI for short). Its scope is now broader focusing on the interactions between algebra, geometry, and mathematical physics. See http://ecc.sci.muni.cz/ for more.

The position is initially for one year with a possibility of extension. The candidates must be recent PhD’s and should submit a letter of application accompanied by a CV, list of publications, and an outline of their research project to Professor Vladimir Soucek (soucek at karlin.mff.cuni.cz) not later than December 15, 2011. Applicants should also arrange for at least 2 letters of recommendation (one can be from a Czech mathematician) to be mailed directly to the above address before December 15, 2011. The successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible but not later than December 31, 2011.

Adelaide

The mathematics department in Adelaide has advertised 3 postdoc positions and one fixed term lecturing position, see http://www.adelaide.edu.au/jobs/current/ A permanent lecturing position will also be announced sometime next year (if things go as planned).

Erlangen

A postdoc position will be available in the research group of Catherine Meusburger within the Algebra and Geometry group at the Department of Mathematics, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Erlangen, Germany. The position is a two-year research position with a starting date of autumn 2012. It is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and does not carry any teaching duties. The salary is determined according to the standard postdoc salary scale at German universities (TV-L 13).

Applicants must have the relevant scientific background and a strong motivation to work at the interface of mathematics and physics on topics related to quantum gravity, quantum geometry and representation theory. This includes research experience in one or more of the following:

  • mathematical aspects of quantum gravity
  • state sum models in quantum geometry or quantum gravity
  • manifold invariants of representation theoretical origin
  • quantum groups and the associated representation categories
  • (higher) categories and their applications in gauge theory and/or conformal field theory

Applicants are expected to participate in the activities of the research group. There are also opportunities for scientific interaction and joint activities with the algebra and geometry group and the mathematical physics group, in the interdisciplinary Emmy Noether Centre for representation theory and with the quantum gravity group in the physics department. Further information on the group’s research is given on

http://www.algeo.math.uni-erlangen.de/people/meusburger-catherine/prof-dr-catherine-meusburger/research.html

The application deadline is December 15, 2011. Applicants should submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • list of publications
  • brief description of research interests.

They should also provide three reference letters to be sent directly by the referees. All documents can be sent by email to catherine.meusburger at math.uni-erlangen.de

Re: Some Job Offers

On the position in Liverpool. Volodya says:

There is some difference between the overseas fees and the home fees, but (a) citizens of EU do not have to pay it, and (b) our department here can sort out the difference between fees anyway.

Volodya also calls our attention to the related ideas in John Baez’s presentation
